44, 000 more young people will get free school meals from August 2009.
Pupils whose parents get maximum Child Tax Credit and maximum Working Tax Credit will be eligible for the free meals. Before, around 118, 000 pupils were eligible. This means a total of around 162, 000 pupils will be getting free school meals from August.
Pupils may also get free meals if their parents receive Income Support, Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance, or an income less than 315, 575 (for 2008-09). Asylum seekers who are receiving support under the Immigration and Asylum Act may also be able to claim free school meals for theor children.
